Algonquian is the main branch of the Algic language family. It consists of three language groupings: Eastern Algonquian, Central Algonquian and Plains Algonquian. Of these, only Eastern Algonquian is considered a true sub-branch of the family, the other two groups grouped together for traditional/historical reasons. (i.e., languages within these groups are not necessarily more closely related to one another than they are to the Eastern Algonquian languages.)
